Ancient bas-reliefs
Artist: After Giovanni Domenico Campiglia
Medium: coloured etching
Size: 82 x 46cm

After Giovanni Domenico Campiglia (1692-1768) - Italian painter and engraver from Florence, active under the patronage of the House of Medici.

Pair of hand coloured etchings depicting an ancient bas-relief influenced by the scenes carved on ancient sarcophagi and frieze. One engraved by Pietro Parrocel showing chariot racing putti. The other one engraved by Carol showing a line up of the gods.

Friezes of "marble" figures are set against a completely flat (red) ground. Antique bas-reliefs, such as sarcophagi and architectural friezes, line with figures with almost no spatial depth, and to depict complex interactions between those figures.

Both framed in black wooden frame with gilding and glazed.

These prints were donated to FARA Homeware in Whitton
